Fearless…or LESS Fear

by Danielle on February 3, 2011

It seems everyone today is talking about going ‘fearless’.  Is there such a thing as being FEARLESS?  Of course there is not.  In fact, having some fear is a good thing!  It’s when the fear paralyzes us or keeps us stuck that we need to find ways to Fear LESS.

We have 2 types of fear basically.  There are the fears that are hardwired (those survivDal fears, which trigger your fight or flight response) and we have belief fears (those are the ones based upon our experiences in the past or our assumptions about the future).

So how do you exercise those LESS fear muscles?  Here are some tips:

1.  First, make sure it’s a fear you want to get control of.  Let’s take a fear of heights (one of my personal favorites!), make sure that you are the one who really wants to get past the fear, not because your mind (or someone else) is telling you to ‘get over it’.

2.  Look at the fear head on.  Often we look at the fear out of the corner of our eye, rather than face it square in the face and challenge it.

3.  Drill down on what belief is causing the fear.  I had a real fear of flying (it’s better, but not totally gone), and what I discovered is that for me, at the core, it’s a control issue.  I don’t feel in control and that makes me afraid.  So what do I do?  I now try to fly every chance I get!  Am I FEARLESS…no; but I fear LESS.

4.  Reframe it.  Most of us would admit to a degree of fearing failure.  This is based on our past experiences and feelings.  What if we reframed those ‘failures’ as learning opportunities?  Yeah, that didn’t turn out the way I wanted, but what do I now know for the next time?  THAT is powerful!

5.  Celebrate (I’m all about celebrating!)  your past successes.  Think of the times that you did something despite your fear and the great results you got.

How do you move past your fears?

Roadblocks, Trolls, and a lil’ She-Devil

by Danielle on January 27, 2011

Have you ever stopped to consider that those roadblocks, mind trolls, and that totally annoying lil’ she-devil that pokes you when you are contemplating stepping out of your comfort zone may, in fact, be disguised as…YOU?

Our mind is really quite an amazing little package.  It chatters at us incessantly, carrying on conversations that seem quite logical and reasonable to us as we contemplate making changes or doing something that makes our heart beat a bit faster or our song a little sweeter.

Really? YOU…asks your lil’ she-devil? Do you really think you are/can/be/do: <insert dream/goal of choice HERE>?

“Of course I can” you say enthusiastically.

HA! Snorts your Ego Mind Troll…remember what happened last time you tried to do that?  Think of what everyone will say!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Besides, you don’t want to be disappointed…AGAIN!

“well” your Essential, Joyful Self starts wavering…”on second thought, maybe you’re right” and so there you stay.stuck.

Not necessarily unhappy, but sure as hell not leaping out of bed saying, “Let’s get this party started!”

So how do you quiet the peanut gallery of trolls, she-devils and roadblocks?

First, you need to notice…really notice the chatter.  Don’t judge it or make assumptions, just notice it.

Now ask yourself…is it true?

For example, for many years, one of my biggest roadblocks was in understanding me rather than what my concept of what ‘me’ should be.  Read that again cuz it’s important!

If your roadblock is fear, is it a survival fear or an ego based fear?  Survival fears are good and necessary, ego based ones come from your mind troll.

You may have heard this before, but it is a profound statement…YOU ARE NOT YOUR MIND.

Finally…move to the joy…really.  Instead of thinking what will go wrong; think “what would make this possible” and start  :-)

Get It In Writing…Really

January 25, 2011

I always thought I was one of those people who didn’t need to write my goals down. In fact, for a long time I prided myself on the fact that I didn’t need to write anything down. Things to do, errands, appts., lists…pfffttt! I had a steel trap mind baby…in a weird way, I considered [...]

The Marathon or The Sprint?

January 19, 2011

Do you do interval training? We’ve all heard of it…and some of us even do it;-) At the gym I go to, my very good friend, who is the owner and a personal trainer, is a proponent of interval training. If you are a fitness novice, the basic premise is that you perform exercise at [...]
